Syncing Culture Code’s Things with multiple macs
Just started using this great piece of software after I read they won the Apple Design Awards 2009. I think I’ve read a review about it before sometime back as I found the icon unmistakable.
Before this I have been using Remember The Milk (RTM), but in recent times I’ve not used it much, went back to the good old pen and paper. RTM is awesome because its in the cloud and there are many ways to access it (its own website, google widgets, dashboard widgets, gmail/gcal integration, email). But I think recently I’m rediscovering my love for good desktop applications. I have also been unhappy with how most of it’s widgets are visually unflattering IMHO. Functionality wise, its excellent, I’ve even introduced it to couple of friends so that we shared some common task lists. Just that it never caught on.
I find myself using iCal more and more as a front end for Google Calendar, its just very pretty. I like looking at pretty things. It calms me. So when I opened Things, I was hoping it could be the front end to RTM. After some quite poking around, I was sadly disappointed.
However, what I did find out was a quick way to sync it across multiple macs via Dropbox:
- Locate Things library folder in <home>/Library/Application Support/Cultured Code/. there is will be a folder called “Things” and your license file.
- Drop the “Things” folder somewhere in your Dropbox (Signup for an account if you don’t have one) Folder.
- Open Things while holding down the option/alt key.
- Click “Select Library” and navigate to your Dropbox Folder and select the “Things” folder that you put there in Step 2.
- Now do Step 3 and 4 for all other Macs.
- Wala! Free Things Multi-mac syncing.
