Web development is like playing with Lego
Over the last few weeks I’ve been pimping my blog and over the course of which I realized how similar it is to playing with Lego. The basic stuff is still build from normal basic lego blocks (html and javascript) but the extra stuff is more frequently being just slapped on (think embed code snippets), like those custom lego blocks (like those hair pieces that only fit on those little mens...

Streamlined Picasa -> Flickr -> Marsedit -> Tumblr...
Blogging doesn’t have to be so hard. When you have to spend considerable effort just to get stuff like images into your blog, you are using the wrong tools. Previously I was on Blogger, so all I had to do was to click the Blogger button in Picasa and I was on my way. This was something I sorely missed after I switched to Tumblr. But I love the Tumblr integration with other applications and...

You know you are getting older when ...
… you have to pay the sleep bank back the very next day. On Monday, I stayed up till 5am working on some stuff. Slept a grand total of 2 hours. Felt lousy the next day and subsequently went to bed at 9pm. Just a few years ago, I would have no problem lasting a few more days. Why does the sleep bank practice age discrimination?

Freedom Festival '09 Akan Datang
Just a little nostalgia from last year’s Freedom Festival in Port Dickson. The guys and I had a great time. Looking forward to this weekend’s 2009 edition in Melaka.

Integrating OpenID, Authlogic and RPX into Rails
I’m currently putting together a new skeleton rails app as a starting point for a couple of new projects I’m working on. Decided to take a dive into the deep end and try to hook up OpenID as a login option. After looking at what’s available plugin wise, I decided to use the very brillant and excellent gem authlogic for handling user sessions. They had an open id module for it but...

The Cult of Done Manifesto
Procrastination sucks the life out of me. Fight back! There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion. Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done. There is no editing stage. Pretending you know what you’re doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you’re doing even if you don’t and do it. ...

I really like Disqus
I recently restarted this blog, after I started using twitter. I wanted to enable comments and it looked like all the tumblrs out there were using Disqus for comments. Here’s just a quick list of what I like: 2 line integration. Easy to theme with CSS. Lots of options and integrations with other services like Facebook Connect, Twitter, which feeds back to those services driving...

Dr KK Seet's very own talkshow
Having been building websites for almost 4 years now, there’s one thing I’ve come to realise. Content is king. Usability and design are two things that go hand in hand but if your content is shit, no amount of usability and design is going to save you. Content trumps usability and design everytime. That being said. fifo.sg has always had content anemia. We just don’t have the...

Live long and prosper
Had quite an enjoyable weekend. Spent Friday night watching House MD. That seems to be one show that both ju and I can agree on, consistently. Saturday started off with a visit to the graves to pay respect to my maternal grandfather. And then my great grand aunt and then my mother’s sister who passed at a young age of 16. All whom I’ve not met before. This tradition came and went...

Hanoi, Sapa, Halong ...
Just got back from a trip that felt much longer than it really was. Pictures soon. Day 1: Thursday 30th April 2009 Landed in Hanoi 9.30pm, had to fill out this stupid yellow health check survey due to Swine Flu twice cause first time round we didn’t fill up our immigration card cause they ran out on the plane. Land transfer to Hotel. Driver was strange, road hogged on left lane...
